ADELAIDE, Australia -- Italian cyclist Giovanni Visconti needed surgery to repair a compound fracture of his right leg after a crash during Sundays prelude to the Tour Down Under. Visconti, a three-time Italian national road champion who rides for the Movistar team, was one of several riders who crashed on the sixth of 25 laps of a street circuit in downtown Adelaide during the 50-kilometre (31-mile) race. He is expected to remain in the hospital for three to four days.
