Inexperienced quarterbacks will be at the forefront of the matchup between No. 1 Alabama and No. 20 USC.The two college football bluebloods will meet for the first time since the 1985 Aloha Bowl on Saturday night at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.Alabama coach Nick Saban announced this week that he had narrowed his quarterback competition to two -- redshirt junior Cooper Bateman and redshirt freshman Blake Barnett -- without closing the door on dual-threat true freshman Jalen Hurts at some point this season.Bateman attempted 52 passes last season, getting one start against Ole Miss before ceding the job back to Jake Coker. We want to play the guy thats the most ready to give us the best chance, Saban said. We also want to continue to develop guys that can compete at this position in the future. Thats kind of where it is right now. Theres really nothing else to talk about. Nothing else to say.USC coach Clay Helton made his quarterback decision earlier in camp, going with junior Max Browne over redshirt freshman Sam Darnold, who has intriguing upside but couldnt yet close the gap in terms of knowing the system. Browne, though, threw only 19 passes as a backup to Cody Kessler in the past two seasons. We feel that it is in the best interest of our football team to lean on the veteran experience that Max Browne has, Helton said.Thats especially true when playing the defending national champions.Alabamas defense, which allowed 15.1 points per game last season, will be top-notch again. The Crimson Tide has four defenders ranked among the top 21 draft prospects for 2017, according to NFLDraftScout.com -- cornerback Marlon Humphrey, outside linebacker Tim Williams, inside linebacker Reuben Foster and defensive end Jonathan Allen.Alabama offensive tackle Cam Robinson and tight end O.J. Howard are also considered first-round talent.USC has elite talent, too, notably wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster and cornerback/returner Adoree Jackson.Sophomore talents, such as Alabama receiver Calvin Ridley and USC running back Ronald Jones II, arent even eligible for the draft yet. There isnt a huge talent gap between the programs; the big difference has been coaching stability.Saban has led Alabama to four of the past seven national titles. USC hasnt even won the Pac-12 since 2008, when Pete Carroll was still roaming the Trojans sidelines.USC is on its third full-time coach since Carroll, with Helton being given the job after taking over on an interim basis following the fourth game of last season. Helton isnt as flashy as predecessors Steve Sarkisian or Lane Kiffin (now in his third season as Alabamas offensive coordinator), and he will rely on a physical offensive approach, led by a veteran line and two running backs -- Jones (987 yards) and Justin Davis -- who have 1,000-yard potential. The line, however, will be missing injured left tackle Chad Wheeler in the opener. Sophomore Chuma Edoga takes his place, with the unenviable task of trying to block Williams, who had 10.5 sacks last season in a situational role. Hell be an every-down player this season.Alabama, needing to replace Heisman-winning running back Derrick Henry, will be young, but talented, in the backfield with sophomores Bo Scarbrough and Damien Harris, followed by two true freshmen. The Tide is pretty much loaded everywhere else, though, as Saban goes for his sixth overall national title, which would tie Alabama legend Paul Bear Bryant for the most ever. The Tide has been very good in neutral-site openers. Alabama has defeated Michigan, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and Wisconsin by an average of 36-16 in such games in the past four years. http://www.giantsrookiestore.com/Giants-Eli-Manning-Jersey/ . The Dane followed up his first European Tour title last weekend with eight birdies and just a single dropped shot on Thursday for a one-stroke advantage over South Africas Allan Versfeld and Portugals Ricardo Santos. http://www.giantsrookiestore.com/Giants-Robert-Thomas-Jersey/ . Arsenal failed to take full advantage of its main rivals stumbles on Saturday as substitute Gerard Deulofeu levelled with a hard shot from a tight angle in the 84th minute to give Everton a deserved point. Ahead of a crucial fortnight that will see them play against Napoli in the Champions League, Manchester City and Chelsea, Arsenal leads by five points ahead of Liverpool and Chelsea. http://www.giantsrookiestore.com/Giants-Kerry-Wynn-Jersey/ . The head of USA Boxing came out swinging Tuesday with an open letter to Tyson -- a former Olympic hopeful himself -- that accuses the former heavyweight champion of trying to poach fighters who might be candidates for the U. http://www.giantsrookiestore.com/Giants-Phil-Mcconkey-Jersey/ . -- Jimmy Walkers first PGA Tour trophy came with a special gift tucked inside. http://www.giantsrookiestore.com/Giants-Mark-Bavaro-Jersey/ . Inter president Erick Thohir says in a club statement on Wednesday that Vidic is "one of the worlds best defenders and his qualities, international pedigree, and charisma will be an asset. 5 Number of times Sarfraz Ahmed was dismissed by Chris Woakes in the series, the most times any batsman was dismissed by a bowler. Sarfraz scored only 49 runs off Woakes, for an average of 9.80 runs per dismissal. There were two instances of a bowler dismissing a batsman four times in the series - Yasir Shah against Gary Ballance, and Mohammad Amir against Alex Hales. Ballance averaged 15.50 against spin, and 44.33 against Pakistans seamers in the series.155 Runs scored by Joe Root against Yasir, the most by a batsman off a bowler in this series. Root was dismissed three times by Yasir, giving him an average of 51.66 against him. The three top instances of most runs by a batsman off a bowler were all against Yasir - 138 by Moeen Ali, and 137 by Jonny Bairstow. The top five instances of most runs scored off a bowler were all by Englands batsmen. Pakistans highest was Younis Khans 100 runs for two dismissals against Moeen.17 Fifty-plus scores for Englands batsmen in the four-Test series, compared to just nine for Pakistan. However, Pakistan converted four of their nine 50-plus scores into hundreds, compared to just three for England. Both teams had one double-century - 254 by Joe Root and 218 by Younis Khan - but there was only one other score of more than 115: Azhar Alis 139 at Edgbaston.39.44 The average runs per wicket for England; Pakistan scored 31.01 runs per dismissal. England took five more wickets than Pakistan, and had a better bowling strike rate as well. 60.30 Englands average partnership for the sixth and seventh wickets: in 14 stands they topped 50 eight times, including two century partnerships. Moeen Ali and Jonny Bairstow were the stars, adding 316 runs in six partnerships, five of them for the sixth wicket. Only Alastair Cook and Joe Root added more partnership runs in this series. On the other hand, the average forr Pakistans sixth and seventh wickets was 23, with an aggregate that was less than half that of Englands.dddddddddddd Pakistan also had problems with their opening stands, averaging less than 18 per completed partnership, with a highest of an unbroken 42 that came in the last innings of the series, when chasing a fourth-innings target of 40. Excluding that stand, their average for the series was 11.85. 27.51 The average for Englands fast bowlers; they took 56 wickets, compared to 43 by Pakistan at an average of 37.67. The averages for the spinners were very similar, though Pakistans spinners - led by Yasir Shah - took 20 wickets, compared to Englands 12. (Click here for the batting and bowling average for England, and here for Pakistan.) 26 Wickets for Woakes in the series, the highest for an England bowler in a Test series against Pakistan, and the second highest for any bowler in an England-Pakistan series: Abdul Qadir took 30 in the three-Test series in 1987-88. The previous highest for England was 23, by James Anderson in 2010.4 England players who have scored 300-plus runs and taken ten-plus wickets in a series where they have played four or fewer Tests. Moeen, with 316 runs and 11 wickets, joined Ben Stokes (against South Africa, 2015-16), Andrew Flintoff (against West Indies, 2004), and Bill Edrich (against South Africa, 1947). In all, only 14 players have ever achieved this double.40.73 Yasirs average in the series, despite two five-fors and a ten-wicket match haul. It is the poorest average for bowlers who have achieved this in a series. Among bowlers who have taken a ten-for in a series, Yasirs average is fourth from the bottom, with Subhash Gupte, Mark Craig and Abdul Qadir having done worse.
